Last week’s macroeconomic news headlines were dominated by purchasing managers’ indices (PMIs) from both Europe and the United States, with the US manufacturing sector beating expectations by far. The mood was less elevated on major stock exchanges. America’s broad S&P 500 equity index lost a fraction of 1% between April 14 and 21, while the Stoxx Europe 600 was up by about the same percentage. This week, the focus of attention is on the Riksbank’s key interest rate announcement and on corporate reports.
